National Yoga Month is one in a select group of national health observances.  It was created in 2008 by the Department of Health and Human Services as a way to promote awareness about yoga and its many health benefits.  Every year during September yoga is celebrated all over the country, and even globally, with a wide variety of activities designed to inspire, educate and promote a healthy lifestyle.

If you haven’t already started practicing yoga this is a great month to give it a try because over 2,000 studios across the country are offering a free week.  Yoga is an excellent form of exercise and there are variations that are suitable for all levels of ability and ages.  Some of the health benefits of yoga include:

  • Builds strength
  • Increases flexibility
  • Decreases stress
  • Improves posture and balance
  • Builds a strong core
  • Encourages a healthy, balanced lifestyle
  • Increases mental endurance
  • Builds physical stamina
